Mini-memoirs
How to capture and share pieces of your life story

Northeast, North Star and Eastside Villages are partnering to coordinate a series of presentations for our combined membership.  This month,
North Star Village is pleased to host writer Glennis McNeal and her presentation Mini-memoirs: How to capture and share pieces of your life story.

Have you ever thought, “I want my children, grandchildren and others to know what it was like when I was growing up, but I’m overwhelmed at the thought of writing a book, or even a story.  Even if I wanted to write one, how do I start? There has to be an easy, lasting way to share my experiences.”

Writer Glennis McNeal has the solution: a mini-memoir. A mini-memoir is

an episode from your life presented in a format that will intrigue readers. People who hate to write can produce a mini-memoir or two. Reluctant readers—every family has them—will learn things about you that stimulate their curiosity and may lead them to ask for more. Mini-memoirs are a good way to kick-start the writing process.

During the 90-minute session, you’ll identify topics that will make good mini-memoirs, learn about the process you can follow to write them so as to engage your readers and see examples of a variety of completed mini-memoirs to help you decide what format to use. These explanations and finished examples will stimulate your thinking about memoirs in general and provide novel ways to present your own stories.

Workshop presenter Glennis McNeal coordinates memoir writing and publishing workshops for Oregon Press Women and currently is writing a book-length account of her early life in the Mountain West and, with her sister Darcy Love, a Montana artist, an instruction book on creating mini-memoirs. McNeal holds a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Humanities from Linfield College and has been a member of the National Federation of Press Women for 44 years.

Before she retired, Glennis McNeal had a career in communications, as a journalist medical writer, Public Relations Director  and freelance writer.  She lives in Beaverton, Oregon. McNeal, a widow, has four children and eight grandchildren with whom she has shared her mini-memoirs.
