COME PLAY UNSERIOUS SCRABBLE!

Why join our Unserious Scrabble game?
By Caprice Lawless

Say you aren’t much of a reader, don’t like thinking of words (or how they are spelled), but need an excuse to get out to a pub on a weekday afternoon to have fun with other Villagers. Come out and play with us at the next Unserious Scrabble game. After first having lunch, we play for one hour, using many helps to keep it fast and fun. The person with the most
points after one hour of play wins the game. We play in sun-filled, neighborhood pubs that don’t have any stairs to climb, and whose managers are more than happy to turn down the music at the

tables where we play.

Well-used Scrabble boards, of course, are familiar workplace pals many English professors like me have relied on to help students make friends between classes. I bend the rules though, to make it fast, loose, and fun. Blank tiles and the ones with whimsical stickers are wild cards and can be substituted for any letter. Also, parked on the table for anyone to use is the latest, hard-cover edition of The Scrabble Dictionary, offering ideas for letters a player has and for verifying spelling. This year I have added a secret sauce to the old Scrabble recipe, however.

Now, each month has a different theme dictating the decorations at my pop-up pub games and to give players even more ways to make points. The theme for next month’s game, for example, is “construction.” Words like shovel, truck, dirt, truck, beam, saw, nail, etc. bestow double points on the player who puts them on the board.

I have three Scrabble sets so as many as 12 can play simultaneously. Yes, I also own an Español Scrabble game for those interested. Give me a call if you have any questions before you, say, dabble in Scrabble. Otherwise, I hope to meet you soon across the table from a familiar
Scrabble board, with friendly Village folk nearby, our brews and wooden letter trays at the ready.
